As a medium, podcasting is not really that new. However, it has been experiencing a massive (and consistent) rise for many years now. It’s safe to say podcasting has in a way reached its tipping point.
And this is not really surprising. After all, the low cost of creation and the ease of consumption has made podcasting the consummate way to reach niche audiences. Those qualities has also made the medium the perfect vehicle for those who would like to build a powerful personal brand.
There are two ways you can leverage the power and clout of podcasts to get your brand in front of the people. One is by starting your very own podcast. Your second option would be to get yourself featured in the podcast of others.
Creating Your Own Show
Without doubt, running your own podcast is a powerful thing—you not only get to host your own show but you also get to tailor your content any way you deem fit. As if not enough, podcasting is not really that difficult nor that costly. In addition, the instruments you need for podcasting are quite commonplace you probably already have some of them available at your disposal.
Basically, one of your primary challenge as a podcaster would be to create a show that will not only set you apart from the rest of the pack but will also highlight your personal brand. To help you best tell the story that matters to you and the people you are targeting, you need to decide on a format that would suit your brand perfectly.
Some of your options are:
Solo talking head. You will be the only one talking and discussing different topics that you think are of interest to your audience. Your show can tackle current events, tutorials, opinions, and other beneficial information or topics.
Interview style. This format will not only add an interesting element to your show, it can also give you the opportunity to leverage influencers to help build your follower count.
Narrative style. This kind of podcast is story-driven and will need a significant amount of editing so a cohesive story is put together.
Multi-host format. If you pick this type of format, you’ll be hosting the show with one or more people. This is ideal if you want your listeners to get more than one perspective or input about the topic at hand.
Be A Guest On Other Podcasts
Getting interviewed especially on top podcasts in your niche can do wonders for your brand. However, you first need to get on the radar of those top podcasters and give them a reason to have you over. While this can seem challenging, it’s actually quite easy if you know how.
Start by:
Researching the top podcasts in your niche. Search iTunes, Stitcher, SoundCloud, and even Google to find topnotch (and extremely popular) shows in your chosen niche.
Listening and studying the shows you want to appear in. Set aside time to listen to the podcasts you’ve chosen. Doing so will help you get a clear understanding and insight into the landscape, host, and the quality of the shows you have shortlisted.
Crafting an amazing pitch. After you’ve narrowed down the shows you’d like to appear in, your next goal should be to create a pitch that will convince the hosts you’ll be able to provide value to their audience. When creating your pitch, start by coming up with a great and interesting headline. The bottom line is make sure you give the hosts an offer they can’t refuse.
Always making sure you do follow ups. Even if you get a no the first time around, keep in mind that you are in the business of building good networks. You also have to remember that relationships (even in the podcasting space) will require nurturing. If you make this part a priority, it will only be a matter of time until you eventually get a yes.
