It only takes a wifi connection to be heard. Imagine the cities all over the world intertwined by invisible wires that allow us to reach people from across the world by merely tapping our keyboards. Technology has made communication as fast as the speed of light, or maybe close to that.
At this day and age, these fast-speed internet connections have become our platform. Thus, to be heard is just a click away.
Sharing is a Routine
Sharing, or oversharing rather, our thoughts have become the latest #trend. We practically start and end our days browsing the internet. Going through our social media accounts to be in the know.
We use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr to share our random ramblings, it could be your day-to-day musings, your pets’ tricks, your baby’s adorable photos, the hip places you go to, the food you eat, your argument with a rude cab driver, your frustrations about the government, the latest argument you had with your partner – basically, anything under the sun.
Then it becomes clear why blogs, aka the online diaries, existed and flourished. And as you would expect in a constantly transforming era, a ‘new’ trend will always be born – thus, podcasts!
Sharing through Podcasts
Podcasts were first known as “audio blogging” which dates back in the 1980s. With the advent of broadband internet and portable digital audio playback devices such as Apple’s brainchild, the iPod, podcasting created buzz in the early 2000s. But it was only in 2013 when it became a real big hit. According to Apple, there were 1 billion podcast subscribers in 2013.
But what exactly is a podcast? Merriam-Webster defines podcast as “a program (as of music or talk) made available in digital format for automatic download over the internet.”
The exact same touch-screen devices that have become an extension of our bodies gave birth to podcast, it’s like a blog except that you get to literally be heard.
According to an article published by the Washington Post, “maybe it’s the intimacy of hearing soothing voices piped into your ears through a pair of headphones – or maybe it’s just how much time people need to kill listening to something.”
In America alone, three hours is spent daily, at an average, on commuting, working out, and doing household chores. These activities usually entail having background music, or anything that will keep your mind off the seemingly boring task at hand. Think of podcasts as music to the ears, but instead of lyrics, ideas – it doesn’t always have to make sense, in case you’re worried – are transmitted through the headphones.
Starting a Podcast
Podcasts allows people to influence so much with only a little on hand – a laptop, a microphone, an internet connection, and an idea, and commitment to complete the formula. Publishing a podcast is absolutely free.
I have narrowed down the list for those who want to start a podcast.
All you need are four (4) T’s: time, talent, topic, and technology. And if you want to turn up the notch a little higher, post-production services such as Podcast Engineers can also help you get the best quality audio.
